Black Friday: Choose Presence Over Presents
Debating on what to buy this Black Friday? Choose presence over presents – here's why.
I've owned a lot of things.
I bought my first house at 23, paid off my car in full at 25, owned more clothes than I'll ever be able to wear, and have blown more money on THINGS than I'm willing to admit.
By 28, I found myself sleep-walking through life and swimming in a pool of things.
I was in a marriage that I didn't want to be in – and working a job that I was far less than passionate about...ONLY so I could pay for all of the shit I wasn't really sure I wanted in the first place.
I found myself sitting on my kitchen floor one night doing backward math to try to figure out how I'd gotten to this point, and asked myself some tough questions:
Q: I hated my job...so why was I staying in it?
A: To pay for all of the things I had.
Q: Why did I have all of these things in the first place?
A: To impress or keep up with people I had superficial relationships with. People who would rather talk about how much their wedding ring cost than about shit that actually matters.
Q: Why do I even care about these people?!
A: Hm. Maybe I don't...
Q: What DO I care about? And on that note...WHO THE HELL AM I?!
A: OH GOD...I DON'T EVEN KNOW! Guess I should figure that out first.
Q: How the fuck do I figure that out?
A: Leave everything behind. Start over. Get out of your comfort zone. Go someplace new. Meet new people. Observe, and change accordingly.
I knew it wouldn't be an easy change...but I also knew I couldn't just stay in my situation and be "content" forever after this revelation.
I've always been the all or nothing type. So what's a girl to do?
I left everything - literally - and embarked on a journey that would change the course of my life.
I began to choose experiences over things. Presence over presents.
I left my marriage. I left my house. I left my job.
I booked my first two trips with Under30Experiences.
I met some amazing humans, and learned more about myself in a six month time frame than I had over the past 29 years combined.
I'll spare you every detail of the next few years - but choosing to be present and to let go of my attachment to things turned out to be my best decision to date.
When we're comfortable, we tend to not be as aware of our surroundings - and most definitely not our SELF.
When we're in a new environment and/or with new people, we're suddenly forced to pay attention and be more aware of ourselves, our surroundings, and each moment.
You know what provides the perfect opportunity to be in both a new environment AND around new people? Small group travel.
Plus, science shows that happiness is directly related to experiences, not things.
So, if for no other reason - this Black Friday, give yourself the gift of travel...in the name of science.
Black Friday: Choose presence over presents
That decision forever changed my life, and I would definitely encourage anyone contemplating traveling to do the same - take advantage of this incredible deal.
I've always been a Jack Kerouac fan, and he completely nailed it when he said,
"Because in the end, you won't remember the time you spent working in an office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain."
This year, instead of fighting the crowds to buy some bullshit - invest in yourself. Invest in experience.
This Black Friday, choose presence over presents.
GO CLIMB THAT GODDAMN MOUNTAIN!
