Yoga in Machu Picchu Trip Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in the Sacred Valley

Afternoon
  • The Under30Experiences team will meet you at the Cusco airport before noon
  • Cusco sits at 11,120 feet of elevation so please remember to stay hydrated and take it easy
  • After meeting all our new friends, we’ll take included private transportation on a magnificent drive to our boutique accommodations located in the Sacred Valley of Peru, outside of the town of Urubamba at Yoga Mandala Retreat Center
  • Recover and relax after a long flight in your hotel room, chat with your roommate for the week, and start to acclimate at 9,400 feet above sea level before a week of yoga
Evening
  • Begin your yoga retreat with a Pachamama or Mother Earth Ceremony with respect to the indigenous culture of Peru and start to feel the connection that Andean people have with the Sacred Valley
  • Enjoy a delicious meal at our opening dinner at the retreat center.  Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options are available.  Get to know the other like-minded travelers on the trip as we prepare to grow ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Day 2

Yoga in Peru’s Sacred Valley

Morning
  • Wake up in Peru and enjoy an incredible view gazing up at the power of the Andes Mountains
  • Begin the day with some light yoga and mobility work to recover after your flight. Work in some breathing exercises that will allow you to acclimate to the lack of oxygen at this elevation.
  • Enjoy breakfast after yoga and prepare for a light hike
Afternoon
  • Take a short adventure to a local waterfall as we take in the magnificence of nature around us
  • Feel the water rushing from the Andes and take in Pachamama’s natural beauty
  • Rest after lunch before getting ready for this evenings session combining yoga, meditation and mindfulness
Evening
  • In the evening, practice yoga at Yoga Mandala’s studio for your second class of the day
  • Enjoy your freshly prepared dinner by our chef and have an open discussion about how we can better integrate mindfulness into our lives

Day 3

Yoga and Sound Healing

Morning
  • Begin to dive deeper into your yoga practice as you feel energized on your third day adjusting to Peru
  • After an organic breakfast from local farms in the area, take part in a sound healing ceremony that the artists consider medicinal music
  • Sound healing can consist of over 30 different instruments including the most famous, Andean flute
Afternoon
  • Enjoy lunch, a fusion of raw healing foods with Peruvian cuisine
  • Take part in an optional coca leaf ceremony to learn more about Shamanism and tradition in this region of the Andes Mountains. If you’d like, have your future read to you as has been done for thousands of years in Peru.
Evening
  • This evening’s yoga class will end with a short candlelight meditation as we begin to develop a rhythm to our practice
  • Relax after dinner and have some time to rest your mind and body

Day 4

Yoga and Pisac Market

Morning
  • Enjoy your breakfast with some teas grown in the chemical free garden on premises at Yoga Mandala
  • Practice yoga and continue to work on alignment as your teacher instructs you with a mix of Vinyasa, Hatha, Iyengar, and Ashtanga yoga
  • Depart from Yoga Mandala and drive through the Sacred Valley, 30 minutes to the historical town of Pisaq
Afternoon
  • Visit one of Peru’s most famous markets to become fully immersed in the culture while supporting local businesses
  • Shop for handmade textiles, handbags, bracelets, ponchos, and other Peruvian goods that will certainly be a highlight of your trip
  • Taste the local cuisine while staring up at the Pisaq Archaeological site and take your best guess at how these terraces were built by the Incas
Evening
  • Unwind with a candlelight restorative class after a beautiful day of exploring Peru’s countryside
  • Further your mindfulness discussions as we seek to create an open community for people to open up and feel supported

Day 5

Yoga and Cacao Ceremony

Morning
  • Wake up at the base of the of sacred mountains, Pitisuray and Sawasiray, and walk to the yoga temple
  • Continue to work on the alignment of your yoga practice and truly understand how to do the poses. There will be no rushing in these classes and modifications with blocks and straps will always be available.
  • Enjoy breakfast and an herbal tea grown in the gardens of Yoga Mandala  
Afternoon
  • Take part in another ancient tradition and begin to learn why the world is obsessed with the cacao plant (chocolate)
  • Understand why so many indigenous cultures feel a spiritual connection with this plant as well as a connection to their higher selves when consuming it mindfully
  • Have lunch at Yoga Mandala
Evening
  • Wind down as you take your last yoga class of the week as tomorrow you will be departing for Machu Picchu  
  • During your mindfulness talk, prepare mentally to visit one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and see one of the most well visited attractions on Earth

Day 6

Machu Picchu

Morning
  • Wake up early and take private ground transportation from Yoga Mandala in Arin, Peru to Ollantaytambo, a town with great historical significance for the Inca people
  • Catch the train from Ollantaytambo along the Urubamba River to the town of Aguas Calientes looking out of the train’s panoramic windows
  • See sacred snow-capped mountains or “Apus” like Veronica and Salkantay. Pass the drop off point for the Inca Trail where hikers begin their 4 day trek.  
  • Eat breakfast on the train and sip cocoa tea on either Peru Rail or Inca Rail carriers
  • Arrive at Aguas Calientes that morning and catch the bus to arrive the base of Machu Picchu National Park
Afternoon
  • Tour this archeological site with a local guide from the Andes who will explain tradition, culture, and history of the city that the Spanish Conquistadors never found
  • If you are lucky, take a llama selfie while taking in the glory of this Inca Citadel 
  • Hear about the spiritual significance that this site has to the Quechua people
  • Eat lunch on your own after your guided tour and then return via bus, train, and private transportation back to Yoga Mandala
Evening
  • Enjoy your last dinner in Peru and continue to connect with like-minded friends

Day 7

Cusco & Departure

Morning
  • Take in the beauty of Peru’s Sacred Valley one last time before driving 1.5 hours to Cusco, sitting at 11,120 feet of elevation
  • Explore Plaza de Armas, the former capital of the Incan Empire and see the blend of Quechua tradition and Spanish influence. Walk around the historic neighborhood of San Blas and snap a picture with the Twelve Angle Stone.
Afternoon
  • Have lunch on your own in Cusco, as you will find chefs from all over the world have settled in this magical city to live out their culinary dreams
  • We suggest staying longer in Cusco if possible to visit sites such as the Rainbow Mountains, Saqsaywaman, Christo Blanco, the Inca Museum, Coricancha Cathedral, or San Pedro Market
  • Depart from Cusco Airport after 3PM as we will provide ground transportation back to the airport if you decide not to stay longer
  • Be sure to exchange information with your new friends and we look forward to welcoming you into our close-knit travel community
