If there’s one thing I love about discovering a new city, it’s the moments that make you smile and think, “Wow, I’m really here”. That’s what Busan had me feeling, with my toes in the beach sand, soaking in the sights, sounds, and new experiences. The whirlwind of beaches, color, culture, and vibrant city life left me wishing I could bottle up the energy as a souvenir. So let me walk you through our highlights from Busan and sprinkle in some travel inspiration for your next trip!
Busan, South Korea: Where the sea meets the city
Busan, the second-largest city in Korea, is a bustling port with a charm all its own that’s hard not to fall for. Stretching along the southern coast, this city is famous for its laid-back beach vibes, fresh seafood markets, buzzing nightlife, and unique blend of tradition and modernity. Whether you’re a foodie, beach lover, or culture seeker, Busan (formerly romanized as Pusan) has a little something for everyone.
My top things to do in Busan
Let’s dive in! Here are some highlights of the experiences and places that made my time in Busan so memorable:
1. Gamcheon Culture Village
Gamcheon Culture Village instantly teleports you into a real-life postcard. It’s a great place to get lost in its winding alleyways, pastel-painted houses stacked on steep hills, quirky art installations, and panoramic views over the city. We wandered around, popping into cute cafés and discovering murals at every turn. Don’t forget your camera—every corner is a photo opportunity in this vibrant neighborhood!
This neighborhood is an impressive example of sustainability, where dollars from tourism have gone directly to refugees of the Korean War to improve their living conditions.

2. Haedong Yonggungsa temple by the sea
Unlike most temples that are tucked away in the mountains, Haedong Yonggungsa, also known as the Dragon Temple by the Sea, sits perched above crashing waves, its bright pagodas and statues glowing against a stunning ocean backdrop. I found a rare moment of peace here—tossed a coin for luck, listened to the wind, and just took it all in. Highly recommended for anyone who likes their spirituality with a side of sea breeze.

3. Gwangalli beach and Haeundae beach
Busan is synonymous with beach life, and there’s no better place to experience it than at Gwangalli or Haeundae beaches. At Gwangalli, the soft sand was the perfect spot for a lazy afternoon, with spectacular views of the bridge stretching across the bay. Right by the beach, the streets are lined with plenty of cafes and restaurants to grab a bite and quench your thirst. Haeundae Beach is the city’s most famous stretch of sand, bustling with locals and tourists year-round. This is the perfect spot to catch a sunrise or join in on lively beach festivals.

4. Taekwondo Class: Find your inner warrior
Want to do something uniquely Korean? We booked a taekwondo class with some local masters. Lacing up our uniforms, learning basic kicks and moves, and feeling that sense of discipline and fun was a blast! Even if you have zero martial arts experience (like me), you’ll walk away with new skills and a fun (and humbling) story to tell.

5. Yacht ride against Gwangalli’s glimmering skyline
One of the absolute highlights? Our yacht cruise at night across the bay with the city all around, bridges glowing in every color, and a fireworks show that took my breath away. Between the music and laughter, the sea air, and the sparkling skyline, it was a magical evening I wish I could replay all over again.

6. Seomyeon nightlife
No trip to Busan is complete without experiencing the vibrant Seomyeon district after dark. This is Busan’s downtown and nightlife hub, packed with neon lights, bustling bars, karaoke rooms, and late-night eats. You can hop from one spot to another, dancing with locals, sampling craft beers, and even try your hand at Noraebang (Korean karaoke)—an absolute blast!
More things to do in Busan if you have time
Busan is overflowing with amazing places and attractions, so if your trip allows, here are a few more top spots to add to your list:

Tips for Your Busan Adventure
- Best time to visit: Spring (April–June) and Autumn (September–November) offer the perfect weather for exploring both the city and the coastline.
- Getting around: The Busan subway is clean and efficient, easily connecting you to all the top attractions. Taxis and buses are also plentiful.
- Try the local food: Don’t miss out on unique Busan specialties including hotteok (sweet Korean pancakes), spicy tteokbokki, and the famous Busan-style milmyeon (cold wheat noodles), dwaeji gukbap (pork rice soup), eomuk (fish cake), and more!
- Pack for the season: Beaches call for swimsuits and sunscreen, but bring a light jacket for breezy evenings or if you’re heading into the mountains.
